do you do much research for projects like this? do you do a bunch of thumbnails for composition? or small studies for the best lighting? and do you use much reference or is this all from your mind? this is one of my favorite pieces of art.

when you do work like this how much research do you do? do you sketch a bunch of thumbnails to choose the composition? and then do you do lighting studies first to see what works best? and do you use much reference or is this all from your mind? this is one of my most favorite works that I've seen.
